This summer, a stretch along Third Avenue in Stone Harbor has become the hub for home design and accessories. A few new stores have opened this year such as Gypsy Lane Home and The Spotted Whale. The Spotted Whale and it is a must see if you need fun accessories or furniture accents.
As you step inside, the feel of the shop is open and airy and the staff welcomes you with a cheery hello. There is room to move around, admire the merchandise and take a seat on a comfy chair. I have so many favorite pieces, but a new addition to the shop is a kitchen towel that I absolutely love. During this contentious election season, a designer had the best idea and that is to laugh at ourselves. Yes, I am a voting member of the Cocktail Party!
The one piece I recommend to my sellers if their house is lacking curb appeal are the wooden signs featured as whales, turtles, crabs, anchors, starfish and mermaids. If the outside of your house looks as though it needs a pop of color, this piece will accomplish that and more. It is a unique way to draw the buyers inside or just a fun piece if you are not selling your house. I do advise to cover the piece with spar varnish if you plan to leave it outside during the winter. It doesn’t compromise the color or look of it, but maintains the finish through rough weather.
Another favorite of mine are the tall shutters that can be used as a room divider or corner piece. I would use them for an area of the house that needs some drama and add a tall potted plant with a light to complete the look. Or a pouf can be added to dress it up and also doubles as additional seating!
One of the most unique pieces is the “trunk bar”. It looks like a steamer trunk when closed, but when you open it, the inside has a complete bar set up with space for glasses, napkins, wine bottles, liquor and utensils. The wheels on the bottom make it easy to move from room to room or deck to deck!
If you are looking for a few small accessories, decorative pillows or large pieces of furniture, The Spotted Whale should be on your shopping list. There are four locations along the Jersey Shore: Red Bank, Barnegat Light, Ocean City, and Stone Harbor. For more information check out their website at spottedwhale.com
