Ben Sparango, an established local home builder, has combined the best of both worlds: a newly constructed single-family home just steps from downtown Wayne. With its high-end finishes, open floor plan and large gourmet kitchen (complete with walk-in wine pantry!), this home boasts much more than a convenient address. Unlike other homes that we feature each month, this home is currently listed for sale by Sue Sparango and Lavina Smerconish of Berkshire Hathaway Fox and Roach Realtors.
Finding a home in sought-after walk-to-Wayne isn’t easy. Many that come on the market need extensive work—which most buyers aren’t up for—and those that don’t get snatched up quickly. New construction in Wayne is rare.
Driving by, you might not even realize the home is new construction (which is a plus in my book!). Located at 406 N. Wayne Avenue, the home is constructed in the Arts and Crafts style of North Wayne with cedar siding, a cedar shake roof and gabled dormers. As much as buyers want new construction, they also want a home that complements—not overpowers—its surroundings.
I first toured this home on a broker tour. The open floor plan, 10-foot ceilings and solid-wood interior doors drew me in, along with the large gourmet kitchen with marble countertops and high-end appliances, including an oversize refrigerator and two dishwashers. One feature, however, stopped me in my tracks. Just off the kitchen, Ben added a walk-in wine pantry complete with shiplap walls, brushed nickel wine racks and a floor-to-ceiling glass door. There’s even space for a tasting table! (Ben told me the inspiration for the room came from a photo he saw in Wine Aficionado magazine.) I loved this modern twist on the traditional wine cellar and how it lends itself to easy entertaining. It’s one of the most memorable home features I’ve seen on the Main Line in the last year and hopefully a growing trend.
Measuring about 3,800 square feet, this home feels spacious but not sprawling. The architect, Mark Asher, did a wonderful job of creating a purposeful and functional floorplan. The large kitchen, dining area and living room are open to each other, creating a beautiful and large main living area. Off the main living area is access to the backyard, which can even accommodate a small pool. There’s a detached, two-car oversize garage as well.
As the wife of a general contractor, I’m often drawn to details. I’ll take custom millwork, beautiful lighting fixtures and high-quality materials over square footage any day! When it comes to the details, this home does not disappoint. Down to the front-porch lantern which has the appearance of an actual flame, this home feels more custom and thoughtfully designed than other new construction homes I’ve toured.
While sitting in the living area chatting with Ben, I wondered who might purchase this lovely home. Whoever the lucky buyers might be, they’re sure to appreciate the high-end features and convenient walk-to-Wayne address.
