Bala Cynwyd lies in the Welsh Tract of Pennsylvania and was settled in the 1680s by Welsh Quakers, who named it after the town of Bala and the village of Cynwyd in Wales. As you drive west out of downtown Philadelphia, it is the first town you come across and it is considered to be the start of the Main Line. Bala Cynwyd has long been home to most of the broadcasting outlets in Philadelphia. Bala residents are districted for Lower Merion High School, who boasts Kobe Bryant as an alumnus.
